Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran-North Branch (ABRII)

North branch of ABRII is the main center of animal biotechnology in Iran. Seventy percent of its research activities have concentrated on livestock, poultry, aquaculture, and industrial insects and the rest related to regional strategic plants. This regional branch has three main research sections including livestock and aquaculture biotechnology, genomics and tissue culture. In two sections of livestock and aquaculture biotechnology and genomics, the genome of animals (most domestic animals) is functionally and structurally surveyed.  With utilizing molecular methods, performing breeding programs for quantitative traits which are often difficult and costly, can be easier, and instead of unknown or random mating and/or selection, targeted breeding program is followed through marker assisted selection. Also, taking advantage of modern biotechnology in the areas of breeding and animal feed, livestock, poultry and aquaculture make them more efficient and more economical. In tissue culture section, strategic and ornamental plants are massively produced using micropropagation techniques. It will bring substantial economic potential. This section is trying to attract private sector Investment to improve its activities in providing highly efficient and cost effective in vitro micropropagation protocol for ornamental plants
